VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Canadians are less confident about their retirement now than they were one year ago. News1130 is finding out what this will mean for the job market and whether this something to worry about.

Eighteen per cent of us were worried last year and that number has almost doubled, according to BMO. Does this mean younger people will remain pushed out of the job market because older folks need to keep working to save. SFU employment expert Richard Harris is skeptical.

“I don’t think that confidence about retirement is likely to significantly impact the job situation in any meaningful way over the short term,” he explains.

But does it impact anxiety levels? Consumer affairs expert Lindsay Meredith says it can, depending on what stage you are in your life.

“Seniors do become sensitive to any kind of report in the economy because it has the potential to affect them. Will a report cause massive public reaction? Very unlikely.”
